The Best and Strongest Marijuana Strains You Can Get in 2020

The best marijuana strains

For every truly strong cannabis strain there is a book of epic stories. Consider this a mini anthology of the very best of those, because today we present you with the best marijuana strains of all time. That’s right: those few strains that inspire almost everyone who tries them to sing their praises—once they return to Earth.

The best cannabis strains have been an evolving proposition. THC levels have been on the rise for years, not least thanks to Cannabis Cup events allowed growers to prove with data who was best at producing the dankest product.

What Makes Marijuana “Strong”?

When most people refer to strong marijuana they’re talking about strains with high THC levels. It’s a more and more popular topic, because THC levels are rising, and they have been for years.

Why? The marijuana of the 1970s may have been awesomely nostalgic, but it was often considerably less potent, too, depending on your source.

For example, if you were a police officer trying to test lots of confiscated skunk weed trying to figure out just how potent this stuff really is, you were probably seeing lots of Mexican brick weed—seedy, stemmy, mess, honestly, that didn’t typically top 10 percent THC.

The modern cannabis consumer is not trying to lay out their hard-earned money for seedy pot. Since the 1970s, growers have been breeding sinsemilla strains more often, and selecting for higher THC levels. Plant genetics are gonna plant genetic, and here we are—among a fine ocean of dank cannabis strains that regularly hit the high 20 percentages.

That good stuff is what everyone wants—and lots of us even grow it ourselves to be sure we get it. So if you’re looking to do the same, or just shopping around for the very best marijuana strains, what should head up your wishlist?

As a team we have reviewed dozens of cannabis strains readily available as of 2020. We evaluated each cannabis strain based on a variety of factors, including appearance, aroma, CBD content, effects, lineage, potency, THC content, and more.

After some heated discussions, we developed this simple list of the best marijuana strains for both medical marijuana patients and recreational users. We separated our picks into three categories: hybrid strains, indicas and indica-dominant strains, and sativas and sativa-dominant strains. Each strain has the same information so you can compare and make up your own mind.

Here are the best marijuana strains right now:

Hybrid Strains

Chemdawg: The insanely pungent strain

As a noob pot smoker you may not understand the powerful appeal of a pungent strain like Chemdawg—at least, not until you’re there. But Chemdawg has a lasting appeal that creates a loyal fanbase, including growers who breed generations of amazing new strains based on this acrid cultivar. For an unforgettable fuel and chemical smell, a stimulating flavor and euphoria, and a solid sense of body buzzing pain relief, people return to Chemdawg.

Awards

When Chemdawg won the 2015 Cannabis Cup title in Colorado, it did so with a massive THC level of 32.13%. But this cultivar has nabbed countless titles over the years.

Genetics and history

The actual genetics here are a mystery. According to High Times, it was bred from something either called Dogbud or Chemweed, which is where the “Chemdog” spelling seems to come from. However, the two more popular versions around the way seem to be either that Chemdawg is a cross of a Thai and Nepalese sativa, or that Chemdawg was bred from the Hash Plant, Kush, and Northern Lights strains.

Undisputed: the dozens of amazing strains that have themselves been bred from Chemdawg, such as Sour Diesel, OG Kush, Chem Jack, Bubblegum Chem, Super Snow Dog, Chem Haze, East Coast Sour Diesel, Jet Fuel, and more. Why? Not just the singularly powerful taste and smell, but also the potency.

Smell and taste

Chemdawg is an utterly new aromatic and flavor experience to the uninitiated. This 55% indica-dominant hybrid is world-famous for its pungent, chemically, diesel-like scent. In fact, breeders pulled the diesel from Chemdawg to create Sour Diesel and a whole line of Diesel strains—so, thank you, Chemdawg chemical profile and earthy, diesel flavors.

Warning: in case it wasn’t obvious, this is not a stealth strain.

Effects

Chemdawg produces a powerful relaxing effect that calms the racing mind yet still leaves a very happy mood. These uplifting effects are ideal for busting up stress and remaining productive for work. Chemdawg is also conducive to composing music, making visual art, and other creative pursuits—hence its ongoing popularity along the West Coast in general and California in particular.

Medical

According to medical marijuana patient reviews, Chemdawg is ideal for coping with anxiety, appetite loss, arthritis, ADHD, depression, migraines, muscle spams, nerve pain, nausea, and PMS. These effects are long-lasting and powerful thanks to Chemdawg’s serious THC levels.

Growing

Chemdawg is an excellent choice for experienced growers, because it can be a challenge, yet it yields well and contains high THC levels of 25% or sometimes much higher—witness the Cannabis Cup results of over 32%. Typically grown indoors, Chemdawg is prone to diseases such as molds and mildew, and demands optimal conditions as it is sensitive.

Chemdawg plants also need sufficient air circulation, excellent ventilation, and the right humidity levels that will need monitoring. Chemdawg is best grown in organic soil with only conservative fertilizer use. In other words, Chemdawg is not for new growers, because it takes a high level of effort and skill.

Summary

  • Split: 55% Indica and 45% Sativa hybrid
  • THC levels: over 32%
  • CBD levels: 0.01-0.10%
  • Terpenes/other cannabinoids: Caryophyllene, myrcene, limonene
  • Parent to strains: Sour Diesel, OG Kush, many others (see genetics discussion)
  • Flowering time: 7 to 9 weeks
  • Growth level: difficult to grow, sensitive to pests and mold

Verdict

Chemdawg is a classic cultivar that offers a happy, uplifting, relaxing euphoria. It has birthed dozens of strains that are themselves cannabis staples today—mostly because of its powerful effects and uniquely pungent profile. This is the heavy-hitter of pungent strains.

Strawberry Banana: The sweet tooth’s strain

Remember how in the 1980s they created Jolt Cola? It was a monstrosity that used this as its catchphrase: “All the sugar and twice the caffeine!” Think of Strawberry Banana as the cannabis Frankenstein for sweet tooths along those lines: all the sweet, terpy smells and flavors, and twice the THC!

Awards

Strawberry Banana has been camping out on the High Times “Strongest Strains on Earth” list since it made it on. At least once the strain clocked in average THC levels of 31.62%. Even if the actual dispensary average THC level is more like 26 to 28%, Strawberry Banana is among the most predictably, proven strong cannabis strains in the world.

Genetics and history

This 70% indica-dominant hybrid was bred by Serious Seeds from the strawberry phenotype of Bubblegum and Crocket’s Banana Kush.

Smell and taste

Just like it sounds this time. Strawberry Banana was bred in no small part to have an incredible sweet and fruity taste of strawberries and bananas, which it delivers. The smell is just as sweet as the taste, and the banana in particular hits you on that exhale. This strain was made for whole-plant concentrates.

Effects

The effects from Strawberry Banana start with a cerebral rush to the head, ensuring you feel both focused and relaxed until—well, it’s over. You may experience a creative boost, and many users report euphoria. With enough of this strain, you may feel sleepy, sedated, or couch-locked.

Medical

According to customer reviews from medical marijuana patients, Strawberry Banana is a great strain for coping with ADHD, depression, insomnia, lack of appetite, pain, PTSD, and stress.

Growing

This indica-dominant strain is an easy grow even for those new to the craft. Indoors, flowering time is about 60 to 70 days, and you can expect a high yield of about 15 to 19 ounces per square meter.

Take special care after harvesting to bring out the most from this strain by curing it properly. Specifically, hang the buds upside down to cure and dry for about a week under carefully monitored conditions: 70 degrees F and 50% humidity. After this stage, seal the buds in jars—still at 70 degrees F, but this time at 60 to 65% humidity.

Summary

  • Split: 70% Indica and 30% Sativa hybrid
  • THC levels: over 31%
  • CBD levels: 0.01%
  • Terpenes/other cannabinoids: Limonene, myrcene, caryophyllene
  • Parent to strains: Strawberry Blondie
  • Flowering time: 8 to 9 weeks
  • Growth level: easy

Verdict

Strawberry Banana is known for two basic qualities: its amazingly sweet aroma and flavor profile, and its THC-content—over 31% on average at one competition, and as high as 26% in your dispensary. This sweet tooth strain will uplift and relax, and Strawberry Banana is among the reliably strongest strains available.

Gorilla Glue: The glue me to the couch strain

Cannabis bud detail (girl scout cookie haze marijuana strain) with visible hairs and trichomes

Gorilla Glue is the sticky, resin factory of cannabis strains—an extremely potent cultivar that has won over many fans with light cerebral effects and a deeper, sedating body buzz. This is one of the strongest marijuana strains today with buds that can produce up to 30% THC. Named for the fact that trimming leads to sticky scissors that barely move, glued together with resin, Gorilla Glue’s stickiness predicts that couch lock you’ll get from it later.

Awards

Gorilla Glue is most definitely an award-winning strain, and it was even developed (successfully) to win the Cannabis Cup. In fact, Gorilla Glue went on to win 1st Place Hybrid in both the Michigan Cup and SoCal Cup in 2014, and 1st Place Hybrid in the 2015 Jamaica Cup. Each time this heavy-hitter is tested, it averages well over 20 percent THC content.

Genetics and history

Chem Sis, Sour Dubb, and Chocolate Diesel came together to create Gorilla Glue. Also known as GG#4 or Original Glue, it is a well-balanced hybrid strain.

Smell and taste

Gorilla Glue smells of earth, lemon, moss, and pine, with notes on the palate that are just a little sweet, along with coffee and berries. On the exhale you might catch sandalwood and other spicy, woody aftertastes.

Effects

Gorilla Glue delivers everything in the way of effects that you’d expect from something too sticky for scissors. When you are ready for that creeping body high that settles you in for the evening, Gorilla Glue is what you reach for.

Of course, it pays to remember that your head is involved too with THC levels at 30% in some places. Expect intense cerebral effects on the way toward deep relaxation. Both the body and head effects last for hours.

One of the best aspects of Gorilla Glue is balance. It’s a 50-50 indica-sativa hybrid, an even balance. But you can really get a sense of that in the effects: the euphoric, skin-tingling, giggly high on the one hand, but the ability to relax and get through some basic functions of the day on the other.

Medical

This is an excellent anytime strain for medical marijuana patients, based on their customer reviews. These users say that Gorilla Glue is ideal for treating anxiety, chronic back pains, depression, insomnia, lack of appetite, menstrual cramps, muscle spasms, nausea, pain in general, and stress.

Growing

Gorilla Glue is a truly easy grow, with or without experience. It grows outdoors in the right climate, and indoors it effortlessly produces tons of buds, assuming you just control your photoperiod as directed for the strain.

Gorilla Glue is also resistant to disease, and in 8 to 9 weeks you get a high yield of 18 ounces per square meter, or up to 20 ounces per plant outside under the right conditions. The only part to watch? Harvest time is just as sticky as you’re hoping.

Summary

  • Split: 50% Indica and 50% Sativa hybrid
  • THC levels: up to 30%
  • CBD levels: <1%
  • Terpenes/other cannabinoids: Caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene
  • Parent to strains: Cookie Glue, New Glue
  • Flowering time: 8 to 9 weeks
  • Growth level: easy, high disease resistance

Verdict

Gorilla Glue is among the strongest marijuana strains, yet it’s so easy to grow. This monster strain delivers for recreational users and medical patients alike.

Like users of GSC, they find White Tahoe Cookies useful for coping with anxiety, depression, inflammation, insomnia, lack of appetite, nausea, pain, and stress. Some users report a mild aphrodisiac effect from White Tahoe Cookies.

Growing

This is a relatively new strain on the block, but growers report beautiful, dense, dark olive-green buds with orange hairs and a frosty blanket of off-white trichomes. Under the right light, these buds can appear lavender—very pretty. With a flowering period of 56 to 70 days and sturdy genetics, this is an easy to moderate strain to grow.

Summary

  • Split: 70% Indica and 30% Sativa hybrid
  • THC levels: up to 25%
  • CBD levels: trace amounts
  • Terpenes/other cannabinoids: Caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene
  • Parent to strains: Moon Boots and The Sweeties
  • Flowering time: 7 to 9 weeks
  • Growth level: moderate

With three thoroughbred genetic lines crossing to make White Tahoe Cookies, you really do get a triple threat strain. The best of Cookies, White, and OG genetics team up on all of your problems, and the triple threat is unstoppable.

Sativa Strains

Ghost Train Haze: The psychedelic trip strain

This famous psychedelic strain is well-known for offering up some of the highest THC levels ever seen. A hugely sativa-dominant blend, Ghost Train Haze is a trippy, feel-good smoke with hard-hitting effects and medical benefits even experienced smokers appreciate.

Awards

With THC content hitting at least 27%, Ghost Train Haze has been honored by High Times more than once. In 2013 it made it to 2nd place sativa at the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup, and by 2014 it took 1st place among all sativas at the High Times Cannabis Cup US. At this point, Ghost Train Haze is a regular member of the High Times Strongest Strains on Earth list.

[As a note, there was a pretty fierce internal debate about the sativa portion of this list, and Ghost Train Haze edged out both Trainwreck and Super Lemon Haze with its reliably high THC content.]

Genetics and history

Bred by Rare Dankness Seeds from Ghost OG with Neville’s Wreck, Ghost Train Haze has since achieved world fame.

Smell and taste

Ghost Train Haze makes a huge first impression with a wave of earthy, sweet citrus aroma that wakes you right up. This invigorating smell is followed by notes of floral and citrus on the inhale, with a sweet and heavy cloud of smooth smoke that lingers, always with hints of lemon peel.

Effects

The name might suggest this strain makes you a shade of your former self, walking around in a daze, but that’s the opposite of the case. Ghost Train Haze is actually fantastic for stimulating creativity and focus, and can power a veteran consumer through a heavy work day thanks to a serious cerebral buzz.

It will make you feel uplifted and ready to get things done, a euphoric wake-and-bake strain ideal for a morning toke. However, this strain is just as nice as something like Pineapple Express for a social activity, or if you’d just like a fit of laughter here and there. For a psychedelic edge to even a business-as-usual day, Ghost Train Haze is all you need.

Medical

Like other high-THC strains, Ghost Train Haze users report strong effects in customer reviews. They like this strain for fighting ADHD, appetite loss, depression, fatigue, glaucoma, joint pains, migraines, muscle spasms, and pain.

Ghost Train Haze plants are bright green beauties that announce themselves with a strong, sour citrus smell—stealth growers, beware. • Split: 80% Sativa and 20% Indica hybrid

Green Crack: The “I get more done before 9:00am than the entire Army gets done all day” strain

Image of green crack strain flowering.

I cannot say enough about Green Crack. Let this be my best effort. If I fail, just know: I am out of Green Crack.

Green Crack is misnamed, in a way, and no disrespect to anyone involved in that process. This top shelf cannabis strain is just that—none of the garbage effects you might worry about with anything related to crack, and 100% pure cannabis. But when you try Green Crack, you can instantly feel that rush to your brain that lets you know exactly what they meant.

Awards

With THC levels hovering around 21%, Green Crack took 3rd place sativa at the 2015 Denver High Times Cannabis Cup.

Genetics and history

Green Crack was first bred in the 1970s in Athens, Gerogia. Although there is some dispute as to its exact genetics, it is reportedly the product of Skunk #1, although an indica landrace such as Afghani may also be part of its heritage.

The story goes that the strain was called Green Kush until Snoop Dogg nicknamed it based on its unquestionably uplifting high. Love or hate the crack reference, one toke of this strain will help you understand the impulse.

Smell and taste

Green Crack is sometime called Mango, and this is far less surprising when you smell and taste it. It has a fruity, tart, sweet, citrusy fragrance and flavor with earthy, tropical undertones. Some grows might smell and taste more distinctly of pineapple, papaya, or mango, while others are more herbal and piney.

Effects

All of the energy of something terrible like crack and none of the anxiety or crash. All of the sharp, energetic, electrifying cerebral high that we all crave from a strong sativa and none of the fatigue or pain you woke up with. Powerful, uplifted focus and all-day energy with euphoric, mental sharpness.

You wake up with coffee. Imagine the coffee a drill sergeant wakes up with. Now dump that swill out and replace it with Green Crack, because it’s enough for a platoon of those guys and it won’t make you crave a danish, either. If you like Durban Poison, you’ll love Green Crack.

Medical

Users reports that Green Crack is perfect daytime medicine for fatigue, including chronic fatigue, without feeling jittery. Medical patients also report in customer reviews that it helps them cope with ADHD, depression, pain, and stress.

Growing

Green Crack is an easy to moderate grow, flexible enough to grow outdoors in a Mediterranean climate and indoors. Outdoors it can stretch more, and Green Crack as a strain demands relatively low humidity and good air circulation as it is sensitive to powdery mildew.

Flowering time is 7 to 9 weeks for an average yield of up to 18 ounces per square meter.

Summary

  • Split: 75% Sativa and 25% Indica hybrid
  • THC levels: up to 21%
  • CBD levels: 0.10%
  • Terpenes/other cannabinoids: Myrcene, caryophyllene, limonene
  • Parent to strains: Green Candy, God’s Green Crack

  • Growth level: moderate, but susceptible to powdery mildew

Verdict

Green Crack is 100% cannabis and 100% awesome. If you want rocket fuel that powers you up all day long, Green Crack is the most powerful strain around.

Sour Jack: The legacy strain

Sour Jack is a strain that is hitting you twice as hard to impress its famous parents. Bred from Sour Diesel and Jack Herer, Sour Jack can’t avoid being recognized thanks to its name, and it has a lot to live up to. It will not disappoint you.

Awards

Sour Jack already holds several Cannabis Cups and the respect of growers and fans everywhere.

Genetics and history

Reportedly bred by Karma Genetics, Sour Jack brings the heavy-handed cannabis lineages of two of the world’s most popular strains: Jack Herer and Sour Diesel.

It is a pungent, delicious aroma that veteran users and noobs alike will enjoy, and a prelude to a host of tropical, citrus, sweet, diesel flavors in the smoke.

Effects

Where Sour Jack works hardest to live up to the reputations of its famous parents is in the effects. This high THC content strain goes straight for the head, lifting the mood and adding a tinge of psychoactive effects to the day. Uplifting creativity and a euphoric buzz are the place you end up, with just a slight wash of relaxation that will never slow you down. No question—Sour Jack is a daytime strain.

Medical

Medical marijuana patients report that Sour Jack’s uplifting buzz is ideal for coping with depression, fatigue, mild pain, and stress.

Growing

Sour Jack is still a somewhat rare strain, and growing information is not always easy to find. However, both Jack Herer and Sour Diesel thrive grown indoors, or outdoors in Mediterranean climates between 72° and 80° F. Both parents flower in about 10 weeks, although some growers report that Sour Jack’s flowering time is 10 to 12 weeks.

Indoor yield is about 12 to 16 ounces per square meter. Both Jack Herer and Sour Diesel are ready for outdoor harvest in mid to late October, and yield should be at least 16 ounces per plant.
